CODES – BF=Bronze Fennel, LE = Laying Eggs, ST = SwallowTail, ETB = Eastern tailed blue, SSK = silver spotted skipper.

8/26/13 – 200 skippers – they are mainly Fiery and Pecks, plus a few SSK, some Dun, a couple Sootywing + others I can’t identify.

8/18/2013 – 3 yellow Tiger ST + 1 black, Ques. Mark, Spicebush LE, Red Admiral, Black ST LE bronze fennel + parsley, buckeye, Pipevine, Monarch (still no eggs), Red Admiral, 50 skippers, Silver Spotted Skipper,  ETB. Grey hairstreak

8/8/13 – Giant ST LE on Rue and Hop Tree – Cloudless Sulphur LE on Partridge Pea I counted 22 eggs, but I’m sure there are more. Little Yellow – TST yellow and black – Giant ST nec on lantana – Buckeye – Question Mark LE hackberry – BST eggs and larvae on BF –

8/3/13 – Black ST 1 male and female LE on bronze fennel – Spicebush ST laying eggs on spicebush – Tiger ST black and yellow – Monarch (male) – Or. sulphur – red admiral – 2 silver spotted skipper – 5 Cab whites – LOTS of skippers – Eastern tailed blue – Pearl Crescent -Hackberry – Cloudless Sulphur – Checkered White? – Summer Azure LE on PeeGee hydrangea,

7/23/13 – Giant ST – 2 Black ST, 2 Tiger ST,  Spicebush ST,2 male Monarchs – or. sulphur, 50 skippers, buckeye, red admiral, 2 silver-spotted skippers, 4 Cabbage whites, Eastern TB.   This week has been the best yet.

7/13 – Buckeye – PL – Or Sul – 2 fiery skipper

Test – cut Dianthus to ground

7/11 – BST – ETB – OR Sul – Reakirts Blue – Sum Azure

7/8 – Buckeye – Tiger ST – Summer Azure – Grey HS –

TEST – cut Daisy May and Daisy White Breeze to ground – then fertilized.

7/5 – 4 Cab Wh – Pearl Crescent + Great Spangle Frit –

7/4 – 2 Fiery skippers nec buddleia  – BST – PL – Grey HS

7/3 – BST – TST – Red Admiral – nec echinacea

6/30 – Red Admiral larvae on False Nettle.

  • 2 Black ST – 1 male – 1 female laying eggs on bronze fennel – not I also have larvae on that.
  • 1st Buckeye nec – slender mountain mint
  • talked to Charlotte – raised 15 Monarch larvae (ordered) – they all died.

  • This has been a great week – besides butterflies, we have numerous hummers and goldfinch

  • (Viburnum is in bloom – that brings in the larger butterflies sometimes.)

  • 2 Monarchs – it looks like the Monarchs have gone through St. Louis during a two to three week time period.

8/15/2010 – another great week.

  • Collected 7 eggs and 5 cats from BST – there’s more out there also

  • 4 Pipevine cats ! – a first! I’m getting rid of my pipevine, but I think I’ll try to keep some in a pot.

  • note – crestwood is spraying – there was no breeze so I doubt whether the spraying is actually doing any good unless the mosquito happened to be crossing the road when the spraying was being done.  The butterfly population does not seem to be affected.
