Bad Advice from Bluestone Perennials

$49.50 for 24 butterfly plants – sounds like a great deal, except that some are terrible butterfly attractors and some only marginal. Bluestone Perennials has a great catalog, but their “Butterly Garden” has some real stinkers. They recommend Achillea and Rudbeckia which are terrible nectar plants. They also recommend chives which is great for cooking, but I’ve never seen a butterfly on chives. Chives also blooms early in the season when butterflies are rarely seen. I have seen some smaller butterflies on Oregano, but there are also better choices.

The conclusion: don’t take advice from a catalog when choosing your butterfly plants.
